Just as they’ve done with Pinot Noir, the Kiwis are carving a reputation for producing fantastic quality Bordeaux Blends that are fruitier and juicier than their more illustrious cousins, and this classy 2009 vintage from the South Island proves the point with it’s purity of fruit and smooth, plump style.

2009 Down Under saw an unseasonably cool spring and a long summer which produced fewer, but exceptionally riper, full-flavoured grapes. This, combined with their use of traditional vinification methods, has created a superbly voluptuous blend of red plum and raspberry flavours from the Merlot, balanced by cassis and tannins, (which are softer than the Bordelaise), from the Cabernet, and cedar notes from the time spent in the barrel.

Roast beef, chicken, duck, pork and soft cheeses all love it as a wine match and even better, the technical sheet claims “Wine in moderation is a natural health food”, so it’s virtually one of your five a day!
