Gadais Père et Fils
After ‘exploring’ California and South Africa and then running Sancerre’s celebrated Domaine Laporte for eight years, Christophe Gadais took over from his traditionalist father in 1994 and he has since brought this estate well into the 21st century.
Split between some of the finest sites right at the confluence of the Sèvre and the Maine rivers, Christophe’s 40 hectares of vines are ideally divided between the schist slopes at St Fiacre - notably the 15 ha vineyard of the Grande Réserve - and the sandier soils of Vertou where the “Muscadet aux Avineaux” is produced. This division by terroir gives two distinct styles of Muscadet – the sandier soils are the source of a soft, easy wine for early drinking, while the schist slopes make for a crisper, more complex and mineral wine that really gains richness and weight from a long maturation with its lees right up to the moment of bottling Sur Lie.
