Five generations of Massas have laboured tirelessly to keep the Timorasso (their grape variety of choice) flame alight. Walter Massa is continuing in their footsteps – and with good reason: it produces some truly fantastic wines. Although he has worked in obscurity for years he is passionate about this grape, and has earnt the respect and renown of many in Colli Tortonesi for his dedication and outstanding winemaking abilities.
The area of Colli Tortonesi is composed of various soils (clay, chalk, stone, sand) and is perched around the nearly-abandoned hilltop town of Monleale Alto, around 200 - 300 meters above sea level. Walter farms 22 hectares in eight distinct vineyard areas. Total production at Massa is about 13,000 cases, of which 5,000 is Timorasso. Timorasso is the original grape of Gavi (which borders the Colli Tortonesi) but post-phyloxera it was almost entirely replaced with the higher-yielding and easier-to-grow Cortese. Walter Massa's family have kept the varietal alive for 5 generations. He produces amazing reds as well from the local grapes (Croatina, Barbera, Freisa, Nebbiolo).
