Nelson, New Zealand
The team at Neudorf under winemaker Todd Stevens and assistant winemaker Simon McQuire believe their primary task is to grow grapes which express the site, to take the essence of that fruit and then preserve it as wine. On the way they may fine tune the balance and complexity in a number of ways but the aim is always to allow the site to speak. Todd’s pedigree includes Quartz Reef and Felton Road – companies who share Neudorf’s philosophy of excellence. He moved to Neudorf in 2012 along with wife Jane and his two sons.
In 1978 and the New Zealand fine wine industry was almost non existent. Yet that was when Tim and Judy Finn decided to buy the old house at Neudorf (which had electricity in just two rooms and no hot water). 31 years they have planted vineyards of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris and are making incredible, award winning wines. The area’s gentle climate, combined with Neudorf’s non interventionist winemaking, produce wines of clarity and distinction. Winemaker Todd Stevens follows structure and texture over flavour and in the Moutere vineyard viticulturalist Mike Saunders follows an organic regime with intense hand work. The 35 hectares under vine are hand thinned, leaf plucked and hand picked. Vineyard management is driven by the winemaker’s desire for ripe flavours with balanced acidity and concentrated fruit. A combination of high plant density (up to 5000 vines/hectare) and low production (one to two kilo per vine for Pinot Noir) helps achieve the quality of fruit to create long-lived, intense but elegant wines. Neudorf Vineyards is a foundation member of the New Zealand Sustainable Viticulture scheme, and the home vineyards have been managed organically for the last five vintages.
