Stephen Henschke has been the lead winemaker since 1979. He has carried out a traditional winemaking practice that has made wines strikingly similar to the vintages his father made decades ago. After he learned winemaking techniques in Germany, Stephen returned to Australia to make high quality red wines at his family’s winery. He eventually led his company to win International Red Winemaker of the Year in 1994 and 1995 during the UK International Wine and Spirit Competition. To this day, he has continued to live up to these expectations of making some of Australia’s most spectacular wines.
The Henschke family has been making wine for five generations. In 1862, Johann Christian Henschke began growing a small vineyard on his farming property located in Kenyeton. Today, Stephen and Prue Henschke work together to create magnificent wines. Their daughter and sons, the sixth generation, are all highly involved in helping their parents find creative new ideas for their winemaking. The vineyards of Henschke are located in a variety of plots in the Eden Valley wine region—including the vineyards of Mount Edelstone, Hill of Grace, and Lenswood. All but Lenswood are located around the Eden Valley region. Sustainable viticulture management is practiced within these vineyards. A lot of the vineyards are dry-grown, so it is an important priority for Henschke to maintain water holding soil capacity by increased mulching and organic matter.
