TJ Evans’s focus on “the heartbreak grape” came to him in a way fitting to the varietal - a complex, humbling path to a revelation. Upon completion of his master’s degree in 1997, TJ worked the harvest at New Zealand’s Villa Maria Estate, apprenticed at France’s 500 year-old Domaine Jean-Louis Chave and served internships with Robert Mondavi Winery and Far Niente. Landing his first winemaking position with La Crema in California’s Russian River Valley, a winery highly acclaimed for its Pinot Noir, TJ’s obsession with Pinot Noir took root. In 2005, he traveled to Chile to develop a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir estate for Vinedos y Bodega Chardonnay and Pinot Noir estate for Vinedos y Bodegas Corpora before at last joining the Domaine Carneros team as Pinot Noir winemaker in 2008.
Founded by the noble family behind Champagne Taittinger, Claude Taittinger’s search for a worthy U.S. counterpart began in the late 1970s. In 1987 he selected a 138-acre parcel in the heart of Carneros, Napa Valley. Domaine Carneros Avant-Garde Pinot Noir was created to be the vanguard of the vintage, heralding the distinctive bright berry qualities of the Carneros region. The fruit for this wine is sourced from all four Domaine Carneros vineyards in the rolling hills of Carneros, all certified organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). This blend exhibits the most fragrant characteristics present in select lots from these vineyards.
