Vinho Verde, Portugal
Diogo Lopes is a consultant winemaker at a handful of Portuguese vineyards, and is a great believer in the new generation of high quality white wines coming out of Portugal. He has worked closely with Anselmo Mendes, the most well know Portuguese winemaker concerning white wines, and has also spent some time working in Napa Valley. His passion is the northern grape varieties of Avesso, Loureiro, Alvarinho and Viosinho and he is a true believer that these Portuguese flavours will surprise the world.
Overlooking the river Douro, the 25 hectare vineyard is located at Santa Marinha do Zezere, in the Vinho Verde subregion of Baiao. Inland, the climate here is warmer than most of the Vinho Verde region and the vines are sheltered from Atlantic rain and wind. The house is a beautiful Portugese baroque manor built in 1720 and the estate has belonged to owner Carlos Coutinho’s family for 7 generations.
