Bodegas de la Marquesa
This winery has been a family company since it was founded in the mid-19th century, and now belongs to Juan Pablo De Simon y Milans del Bosch, the great grandson of the founder of the winery. He has maintained the concept of “Vino de Pago” a more localized appellation of origin, which inspired the Marquis de la Solana. The 5th generation of the family, Pablo, Jaime and Maria de Simon (Juan Pablo’s children), have taken over the different responsibilities in the winery, bringing new ideas and approaches to the business with them, but always keeping the same concepts on which the company was founded: family, estate vineyards and respect for quality and work well done.
Bodegas de la Marquesa is a family run operation that own 65 hectares of vineyards in which they grow Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha, Graciano and Viura. All their plots are situated within the boundaries of Villabuena, a short distance from the wine cellar, on sun-kissed slopes which descend from the Sierra de Cantabria, protecting them to the north, towards the banks of the River Ebro in the south west. With the prime goal of preserving the character and quality of their wines, they still maintain very old, low-yielding vines, at the same time as new plantations start to bear fruit. The average age of their vines is over 25 years. Their Viura grapes are only grown in the highest plots and poorest soils of their vineyards, which is one of the top quality spots. Their white grapes are exclusively to be used to make their cask-fermented, cask-aged white wines.
