Berhnard Ott is the fourth generation of his family to run the winery but since taking control he has made radical changes to the wine-making philosophy at the estate. There is not another white wine vintner in Austria that has positioned himself so clearly with one single grape variety. 90% of Bernhard Ott’s total vineyard is dedicated to Gruner Veltliner, deservedly earning him the name ‘Mr Veltliner’. From his very first years working on the family estate, he invested heavily in this variety and can now boast a broad spectrum of six different Veltliners offering nearly every style and taste variation possible. All his wines are made biodynamically which he reports is effective against disease and drought.
The broad assortment of Bernhard Ott’s wines begins with the light, refreshing am Berg. The vineyards for this wine lie on the flatter sites at the foot of the Feuers-brunner Weinberger, which generally discourages over-ripeness of the grapes. The result is a spicy uncomplicated Veltliner made for easy drinking enjoyment. He uses limited and light machinery to support the fertility of the soil and practices organic farming to produce their fresh and impressive wines.
