The domaine is named after Cyril's father Charles. Cyril first started helping his father out at the tender age or 12 and is now the winemaker for the domaine. He places a huge emphasis on traditional techniques to treat the soil by ploughing and earthing-up. His approach to vinification aims to get the healthiest fruits a preserve their freshness throughout the different stages of the process. Cyril credits his great-grandmother, Marie, for the survival of the domaine since she kept it going following the untimely death of his great-grandfather in World War 1.

Domaine Charles Audoin covers 14 hectares across Marsannay, situated towards the top of the Côtes de Nuits. Marsannay is often thought to offer the best value for money in the Côtes de Nuits, having not yet secured a Village classification, but producing wines many consider well worthy of it. At Domaine Charles, they don’t in fact own any ‘Bourgogne’ vineyards. This Bourgogne Pinot Noir is actually a declassified Marsannay or, as Cyril Audoin would say, ‘a Marsannay in disguise’, with the grapes coming from the younger vines planted in their Cuvée Marie Raggoneau vineyard.
